I think our proposal should also have general guidelines about selections,
clipboard and shift/control/alt-drag etc. One thing we could say is that
the Macintosh style selection where entered text replaces the selection
WITHOUT STORING IT SOMEWHERE ELSE is very bad practice (a good way of
distinguishing ourselves from the Mac).

No. You didn't properly read Warwick's point. It is the COMBINATION of
^A and other, MORE GENERALLY dangerous behaviour of programs, such as
'typing replaces selected text irrestorably', and of Shift-backspace and
the fact that it may sometimes not be undone, that causes you harm.
It is those OTHER dangerous behaviour of applications we should provide
guidelines for to change. I claim here that while my editor package Edith
has ^A and shift-backspace, you will, after setting the right 'built-in
safety options' NEVER EVER have to worry about pressing the wrong keys
again.
Go ahead, drop ^A and Shift-Backspace. But I assure you, in a few days
you'll find a new harmful combination.

Why not have them do nothing, like ^A? Well, why not have all keys do
nothing, except A-Z, a-z, 0-9, punctution, space, return and backspace?
Those are all you need, basically.
